Identification

In Drama the more able student will demonstrate the ability to:

• Adopt and sustain convincingly a wide range of roles/characters.

• Appreciate different genres and select and apply in a skilful manner to their own work.

• Handle abstract theatrical concepts and apply them in a concrete and effective way to their own work.

Eg. Use of symbolism and metaphor.

• Make perceptive connections between the Drama process/product and the universal issues it addresses.

• Take responsibility for both the form and content of Drama and demonstrate an understanding of their connection.

Strategies for meeting the challenges of an able pupil

o Incorporate into the planning, occasions for able students to research, plan and interact with the rest of the group in a specified role. They should be given opportunities to analyse the impact of their role not only from their peers responses, but also through their own reflection and understanding of the nature of the ‘person in role’ in the Drama process.

o Provide challenging tasks such as preparing and planning a theatrical approach to a complex text and making it accessible and meaningful for a specified group, e.g a special needs group. This challenges able pupils intellectually, socially and creatively.

o We provide able pupils with stimulus material that requires them to go beyond the surface meanings in order to engage with the issues in depth.

o Use of questioning – Incorporate questions which extend their work and encourage them to take their Drama in new directions in an experimental way.

o We intend to offer able students with access to theatre artists and have forged links with local Theatre groups. This shows students successful role models of people with careers in the Arts.

o Extend pupils expectations, experience status as well as achievements, by building into the Drama schemes opportunities for them to work alongside theatre artists as colleagues on a shared project ( Open Minds theatre company, Trestle Theatre Company)

o Giving students significant responsibility for running a theatre project, such as our school play.
